# Why AI UI all looks the same

Open three AI-built products side by side and you will recognize the family: soft cards, purple accents, even spacing, a dashboard that could belong to anyone. That is not bad taste. It is how the models fill every decision you did not make.

Why does AI-generated UI all look the same?

When a prompt leaves layout, type, color, and states unspecified, the model picks high-probability defaults. Those defaults cluster. Same card grids. Same "modern" purple. Same hero-plus-stats shape. Same sidebar. The output looks finished because it is familiar, not because it matches your product.

Sameness is a symptom of missing decisions, not a style crime.

The sameness checklist

1. Identical layouts: every page is the same hero, card stack, or three-column dash. 2. One flat type hierarchy: headings and body compete at the same volume. 3. Missing states: no empty, error, or loading design; happy path only. 4. Token drift: spacing and color values differ slightly screen to screen with no names. 5. Prompt-sounding copy: labels and empty text read like the instruction, not the product.

If three or more show up, regenerating will not save you.

What should I change first in a generic AI-built UI?

1. Name tokens and a type scale 2. Pick one primary journey 3. Define states (empty, loading, error, permission denied) 4. Cut duplicate components 5. Write real product language

Diagnosis names what is wrong. A pixel polish pass only paints the same structure.

How is diagnosis different from a pixel polish pass?

Polish changes colors and corners. Diagnosis decides hierarchy, journey, states, and which patterns are allowed.
